Minimum capital depends on the services: €50,000, €125,000 or €150,000, or one quarter of the previous year’s fixed overheads if higher (MiCA Art. 67 and Annex IV). We explain it in our guide to the CASP license in Spain.

How to obtain authorization

The MiCA transitional period ended on July 1, 2026 at the latest (Art. 143(3)). Since then, providing crypto-asset services in the Union requires authorization as a provider or being a financial entity entitled to provide them (Art. 59).

In Spain, the CNMV grants authorization (Law 6/2023, Art. 251). It has 25 working days to check whether the application is complete and 40 working days to decide once it is (MiCA Art. 63). Since Royal Decree-law 25/2026, crypto-asset service providers are obliged entities under Law 10/2010, and SEPBLAC reports on their internal control during the authorization process.

If you were operating as a provider registered with the Bank of Spain, see our guide on the transition from VASP to CASP. And if you already hold authorization, our guide to the MiCA passport explains how to operate in other countries.

Sources and methodology

Official sources

Methodology: we include every entry in ESMA’s register whose home Member State is Spain, both those authorized under Article 63 and those entitled under Article 60. The country count uses the same file. ESMA’s register is interim; the competent authority in Spain is the CNMV. We review the data every month. If you use this information, please cite ESMA as the source.

Authorized CASPs in Spain

How many crypto-asset service providers are authorized in Spain?

According to ESMA’s register as of October 19, 2026, 16 entities domiciled in Spain can provide crypto-asset services under MiCA: 10 providers authorized as CASPs (Article 63) and 6 financial entities that have notified their authority (Article 60).

What is the difference between an Article 63 CASP and an Article 60 entity?

MiCA Article 63 governs authorization as a crypto-asset service provider. Article 60 allows entities that are already authorized, such as banks, investment firms or electronic money institutions, to provide some of those services by notifying their authority.

Can a CASP authorized in Spain operate in other countries?

Yes. MiCA authorization allows a provider to offer services in the rest of the Union with the EU passport, by notifying the relevant countries. Of the 16 Spanish entities, 5 can operate across the entire EU or the entire European Economic Area.

How can I check whether a company is authorized?

By checking ESMA’s register or that of the CNMV, the competent authority in Spain. If the company is not listed, it has not been able to provide crypto-asset services in Spain since the MiCA transitional period ended.

How often is this list updated?

We review it every month against ESMA’s register. The data date is shown at the top of the page.

The regulated crypto-asset market in Spain

With MiCA, providing crypto-asset services in the Union became subject to a harmonized authorization. Spain has 16 entities on ESMA’s register: 10 providers authorized by the CNMV and 6 financial entities, mostly banks, that have notified that they provide these services.

Five of the Spanish providers can operate across the entire Union or the entire European Economic Area. The rest are limited, for now, to Spain or a few countries.
